FAQs
Do I need a drum kit to start?
Simply put - No. Although it is highly advised that you pick up a kit to practice at home, with regular sessions and the use of an inexpensive practice pad at home, you can make great progress without owning a full kit.
Aren’t drums loud? Won’t my neighbours complain?
While it’s true that the drumset can be one of the loudest instruments, the days of noise complaints from grouchy neighbours are long gone. Either through the use of electronic drum sets or modern Low-Volume cymbals and mesh drum heads, you can have the full drum set experience and keep your household happy without the neighbours even knowing you play!
What do I need to bring to my first lesson?
We recommend bringing a pair of drum sticks if you have them (we can help you with that) and an A4 display folder for any sheet music we give you. That’s all!
How do online lessons work?
Once you have booked your lesson time, you will be sent a Zoom meeting link as an invite to the online lesson. All you need to do is open it up on your laptop/tablet or smartphone and you’re good to go! You don’t need to have a fancy microphone, a top of the range electric drumset or anything other than an internet connection and a webcam.
What ages do you teach?
We strive to teach all ages at The Backbeat Academy, however, below the age of 5 is usually more of a challenge than is good for the student. We recommend Ages 5+ to begin.
Of course, there’s no upper limit - if any 80+ year olds want to take up drums, we’ll show you the ropes!
Can I buy some lessons for a friend/family member?
Absolutely! Drum lessons are a great gift and we have had many students join our family as a result of gifted lessons. In our bookings tab you will see an option for a lesson voucher. You can select the lesson length and amount of lessons. Upon checkout you will receive a voucher emailed to you.
